The 35-year-old's stance might have changed once word was released that the Braves' presumptive starting second baseman, Sean Rodriguez, will be sidelined for an estimated three to five months. Phillips joins a list of new Atlanta players that includes Bartolo Colon, R.A. Dickey, Jaime Garcia and Kurt Suzuki, who only have guaranteed contracts through 2017.
Phillips was a three-time All-Star in Cincinnati and a four-time Gold Glove Award Winner.
In the Braves' case, the addition of Phillips is another instance of what president of baseball operations John Hart has been doing all offseason: adding veteran experience at a low price. He scored 74 runs with 11 home runs, 64 RBIs and 14 stolen bases. His wRC+ of 103 was a bit better than Phillips', although his defensive numbers showed him to be a bit below league average in the field. Phillips hit safely in 13 of his last 16 games of the season.
Phillips turns 36 in June and is coming off a solid season.
Phillips graduated from Redan High School in Stone Mountain, Ga., in 1999.
"We are thrilled to "welcome home" Brandon to Atlanta, where he will play in front of his family and friends and many of his fans", Coppolella said. He has played at the Major League level for Cleveland (2002-2005) and Cincinnati (2006-16). He made 27 relief appearances for the Braves in 2015 on either side of an 80-game suspension for a human growth hormone-releasing peptide but was cuffed for a 5.93 ERA. Rosenthal noted Phillips "used his no-trade protection to thwart deals to the Diamondbacks and Nationals" last offseason. Portuondo, who pitched in Cuba's Serie Nacional from 2005-2013 and signed with the Braves for a $990,000 bonus last February, put up a 3.63 ERA with 6.5 K/9 in 17 appearances totaling 34 2/3 innings for the Braves' High-A and Triple-A affiliates a year ago, his first stateside.
For Atlanta, Phillips will serve as a stopgap until prospect Ozzie Albies is ready.
In 72 games and 256 plate appearances previous year, Peraza was actually pretty good, batting.324/.352/.411 at a number of different positions.
