Officer responding to vehicle crash is shot dead; 2nd officer wounded

Authorities investigate the scene where a police officer was fatally shot, and another wounded, in Whitter, Calif., on February 20.

Two police officers and a "suspect" were struck by gunfire during an officer-involved shooting in Whittier (CA) on Monday morning, according to preliminary information released by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Police returned fire, wounding the suspect, Corina said.

Corina told reporters the suspect was driving his vehicle and rear-ended other cars that were waiting at a stoplight.

The three injured were were taken to a hospital, Los Angeles County Fire Department officials said.

Three people were wounded Monday in an officer-involved shooting in Whittier.

They "think they're there to help, next thing they know they have this guy shooting at them", Lt. John Corina said.

Few details have been released about the incident, and it was not immediately clear what prompted the shooting.

The wounded officer was in stable condition, said Nicole Nishida, a spokeswoman for the sheriff's office.

Their conditions were not known.

A sedan directly in front of the SUV had front end damage, and a weapon was visible on top of the car's trunk, the footage showed.
