Analysts have suggested that Banerjee would have little option but to soften up to the BJP after its spectacular victory in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarkhand and possible success in forming governments in Goa and Manipur, despite having got fewer seats than the Congress.
The BJP claims it has support of 22 MLAs, including those from the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) and the Goa Forward Party (GFP).
However, he was taken to Guwahati by a special flight after a chaotic situation erupted between the BJP and Congress leaders which include elected legislators at the airport over taking the elected independent legislator in their camp. The cherry on the cake is of course Uttar Pradesh where the party won a whopping 325 of the 403 seats this election.
Responding to the Supreme Court ruling, a leading Congress member, Renuka Choudhury, said party general secretary Digvijay Singh, who negotiated with Goa lawmakers on the local government formation, should be removed from his post.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday requested the Goa Governor to ensure a floor test on Thursday as the only agenda for the day to decide whether Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has the support of the majority.
On questions being raised on his leadership after the party's poor performance in UP and Uttarakhand, he called for initiating changes within and hailed the role of regional leaders who fought assembly polls and emerged victorious."As far as the Congress party is concerned, we do need to make structural and organisational changes and that is a fact", he said. The high command has screwed Congress over in Manipur and Goa, where the party is eyeing a stint in the opposition despite being the largest party in both the state assemblies. The Congress has done it in the past, now the BJP is just as adroit at playing the "aya Ram, gaya Ram" game (or in Goa in the past described as "aya D'souza, gaya D'souza"). "Congress has been protesting that it should have been invited by the governor of Goa to have its leaders sworn".
Along with Parrikar, governor Mridula Sinha administered oath of office to nine ministers at a simple ceremony attended by BJP president Amit Shah and union ministers M Venkaiah Naidu, Nitin Gadkari and JP Nadda.
But the BJP has moved and appear to have stumped the Congress by engineering defections of Shyamkumar and managing Robindro, even though it was not clear which Ashab uddin would go.
Besides the humiliating defeat of Parsekar, who lost by over 7,000 votes, six BJP ministers too were trounced.
"It is miserable and awful...people trusted the Congress and voted for us...we get a clear 17 seats and we still couldn't manage to form government... we are the laughing stock", newly-elected Congress MLA Jennifer Monserrate was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.
Another Independent MLA, Prasad Gaonkar had submitted letter of support, the chief minister said.
