US wants China to take action to stop North Korea nuke tests

President Donald Trump says that the United States is prepared to act alone if China does not take a tougher stand against North Korea's nuclear program.

The already strained relationship between the northern and southern parts of the Korean peninsula has grown more tense lately as Seoul engages in its annual joint military exercises with the U.S., which has prompted many threats from Pyongyang and its supreme leader, Kim Jong-un.

President Donald Trump has said the United States should strike a tougher posture with North Korea, following years of failed efforts by the USA government to get Pyongyang to abandon its nuclear program.

Speaking on his first visit to Britain as Pentagon chief, Mr Mattis condemned North Korea and described the isolated communist country as the most immediate threat faced by the US.

"This is a time", Detrani said, "for the Trump administration to be proactive with a North Korea that's quickly approaching a point where there, they will become an existential threat to the United States as they now are to our allies South Korea and Japan and the region".

The U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned 11 North Korean individuals and one entity on Friday, for their roles in facilitating the DPRK's weapons programs.

"Well if China is not going to solve North Korea, we will".

"They need to show us how concerned they are", Haley said. Last year, North Korea conducted two nuclear tests and two dozen tests of ballistic missiles.

"Yes, we will talk about North Korea", Trump told the newspaper for a story that appeared Sunday on its website. China can, and that's the part we want to look at.

The new measures named several North Koreans who were working on behalf of WMD-related entities in mainland China and one in Cuba, while representatives of sanctioned DPRK financial institutions in China and Russian Federation were also added to OFAC's designated individuals list.

Chinese President Xi Jinping will meet with Trump in Florida later this week. The committee also passed a bill calling for redesignation of North Korea as a state sponsor of terrorism and a resolution denouncing its intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) program.

North Korea has been reported to possess around 25 chemical agents, including six nerve agents like sarin and VX, according to a 2016 report from the Korea Institute for Defense Analyses.

U.S. Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley is introduced at the Women's Empowerment Panel, Wednesday, March 29, 2017, at the White House in Washington.

As for the United Nations, she said it has "gotten stale" and she described her hatred for bureaucracy, saying she has avoided it so far by dealing only with Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, whom she described as "a partner" committed like she is to reforming the world body.

"We are indicating to the administration that they already have important tools at their disposal", the Republican lawmaker from California told VOA on Thursday, when asked what the Trump administration should do to counter the nuclear threat.
