Of course, St. Pierre has to get through middleweight champion Michael Bisping later this year before he can even begin to think about what's next, but there's no question that matching up McGregor and St. Pierre would draw massive numbers for the UFC.
With the main event featuring a light heavyweight title match between current champion Daniel Cormier and challenger Anthony Johnson, many expect the victor will face off with Jones once his 12 month USADA drug suspension expires in July. Case in point: At a press conference early previous year held to promote Cormier's rematch with Jon Jones at UFC 197 - Cormier would ultimately withdraw from the bout due to injury - fans booed "DC" while cheering the controversial Jones. So Toronto's loss appears to be Buffalo's gain.
The UFC light heavyweight title will be on the line this Saturday night when the Key Bank Center in Buffalo, New York plays host to UFC 210. "So to come back here to defend the title all these years later, I think it's great".
According to Stevenson, DC should follow the game plan that he used in their first fight at UFC 187 by avoiding Rumble's power and wearing him out with takedowns for five rounds.
It's not fair, but both Cormier and Johnson admit that it's true.
"I felt it, trust me, I don't want to feel it again. Everything has improved, I'm not just going to sit on my ass", Johnson said. In the first outing it was Cormier who defeated Johnson via submission to claim the vacant title which was taken from then champion Jon Jones after legal issues sidelined him from the sport of mixed martial arts. In an interview, "Rumble" said Jones will, "always be around, regardless of what happened". Cormier is an exciting fighter. "I don't look past this fight, I don't even care about the title right now". So I get annoyed because I'm like, 'Why are you asking me about a guy that, three days before we were supposed to fight, pissed hot?' That's the stuff that annoys me, not the fact that he's a good fighter. Cormier was able to capitalize on this by maintaining the same pace and ultimately wearing Johnson down. I'm just going out there to have fun and there's no pressure on me. "When you're part of something like that, it stays with you".
While Rumble is a strong fighter and a one-punch knockout artist, I wouldn't take him as the favorite in this fight.
Georges St. Pierre has been careful about not revealing too much about his plans, but boxing coach Freddie Roach wasn't quite as guarded on The MMA Hour podcast with Ariel Helwani this week.
