"Vanessa Marcotte was a much loved member of the Google team, working in our NY office for the past year and a half, and known for her ubiquitous smile, passion for volunteer work, and love of Boston sports", a Google spokesperson said.
Colon is now being charged with aggravated assault, aggravated assault and battery, and assault with attempt to rape, said Early.
Vanessa Marcotte's body was found August 7 in some woods about a half-mile from her mother's home.
The New York City Google employee was visiting her mother in Princeton, Massachusetts when she went jogging on the afternoon of August 7, 2016.
The arrest of Colon-Ortiz came after police developed a description of a suspect based on tips, and a state trooper stopped an SUV being driven by a man who matched the description.
"There's also one other person I'd like to thank in this case, and that would be Vanessa Marcotte", Early said.
The identification of the suspect has not yet been released.
An arrest has been made in connection to the murder of 27-year-old Vanessa Marcotte, CBS Boston reports. "It was through her determined fight and her efforts that we obtained the DNA of her killer". Ortiz is charged with aggravated assault and aggravated assault and battery, and assault with intent to rape. "Not having a piece of paper immediately at his disposal, he wrote the license plate number down on his hand", he said. Colon-Ortiz gave the troopers a buccal swab, which was used to match his DNA.
Sources confirmed the arrest earlier in the day. Early said Colon-Ortiz, who speaks limited English, has requested an attorney.
