Phil Jackson: Carmelo Anthony 'better off somewhere else'

"You lose in the first round, it didn't work out, and you think, 'We gotta change some people on our team.' So there maybe some quick outs that may change some people's minds as to what they're going to do".

The Carmelo Anthony era in NY might be coming to an end this offseason. Phil Jackson has received a lot of heat as the center of blame.

After going the entire 2016-17 season without addressing the media, Phil spoke bluntly for about an hour, addressing his priorities for the upcoming offseason. The team started sluggishly out the gate and never found their footing. The Knicks haven't made the playoffs since the 2012-13 season, though, which is especially troubling given that NY expected to return to the postseason this year after adding Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah last summer. We're starting to get some players on the court we can do that.

Porzingis later liked Anthony's post on Instagram.

Their feud wasn't a feud until the trade deadline approached. Yet, Jackson, the coach, thinks the Knicks have a solid returning foundation because Ron Baker, Willy Hernangomez and Lance Thomas are "competitive" and play hard. From a broader perspective, Jackson sounds as if he knows a rebuild is imminent. It was a noble idea Jackson had but here's the thing.

Instead, because Jackson operates as cover for Dolan and keeps him from taking incoming fire from the media (at least when Dolan isn't cursing at fans or banning franchise legends from MSG for life), Dolan agreed to keep him for two more years at $12 million per - a contract that only rivals Noah's as the worst in the National Basketball Association. With the losses mounting, Jackson also tried to trade Rose but there were no takers. "You don't want to end up your career not winning", Jackson said.

"If somebody was talking bad about you indirectly at your job, what would you do?" he said. Thibodeau was given a five-year deal last summer to take over and instill his attention to detail and defensive focus to an impressionable young team, but they won just two more games this season than last with little discernible improvement on defense. This is not something you want to have labeled on your career. And I feel the same way. "So I think I've got to do a little bit more on scene, on-target mentoring". Anthony isn't an All-NBA-level talent anymore, but he still has a massive contract, with two years and $53 million remaining. If Anthony doesn't want to stay at the Knicks, a place where he isn't wanted, he may have to go to a team that won't be fighting immediately for a championship. However, the team would love to move forward but Melo holds the keys.

"The buck stops here", was the only comment from Jackson that sounded executive, but it wasn't long before he was analyzing everyone's shortcomings except his own.

"Either draft or somewhere down the line in free agency (Knicks will address point guard position)", Jackson said. But he wants to redeem himself as a player, which I like that attitude. Melo has stated that he didn't trust Phil afterward and with that being said, the Knicks went and picked up his option. The team had a great mix of talented veterans including Carmelo Anthony, Amar'e Stoudemire, Jason Kidd, and J.R. Smith.
