Crowd gathers for National Day of Prayer

In 1952, Congress established an annual day of prayer and, in 1988, that law was amended, designating the National Day of Prayer as the first Thursday in May.

Pastor John Waters of First Baptist Church, along with other local spiritual leaders, are slated to speak, and Statesboro Mayor Jan Moore will read this year's National Prayer, he said.

Organizers will host the 6 p.m. event on the square of the historic Lowndes County Courthouse in Downtown Valdosta.

The Rev. Paul Bush, president of the Concerned Ministers Fellowship of Aiken and the Central Savannah River Area and the senior pastor of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, said, "Every day is a day of prayer". We do not need to be spiritually asleep on this day, but alive and actively calling out to the Father for our nation. Attendees will pray for government leaders, law enforcement, families and church leaders. We know that we can depend on you, Lord, we pray for our local government, for our city and for our county.

The National Day of Prayer mobilizes unified, public prayer for America.

More than 2 million people are expected to attend the services, which take place at state capitols, county courthouses, schools, business, churches, on city hall steps and in homes.

She encouraged those who were unable to make it to the prayer sessions on this day to still take the time to come together with other believers in prayer.
