Fleury among players exposed for Vegas NHL expansion draft

The NHL announced on Sunday the available and protected lists for the 30 teams who will provide players to the Golden Knights.

The Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins avoided making a potentially harmful trade several months ago when they asked veteran goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury if hed waive his no-movement clause so they could protect 23-year-old goalie of the future and present Matt Murray.

The Washington Capitals were one of 30 National Hockey League teams to submit their list of protected players for the Las Vegas expansion draft by 5 p.m. Saturday.

Vatanen, who will miss the start of the season after having shoulder surgery, and Josh Manson were the odd men out in Anaheim, because the Ducks couldn't protect their all their talented core of defensemen.

Vatanen, a fifth-year player, won't be ready for the start of next season after having surgery to fix a shoulder injury.

As this lost season drags on, and even the ice grows exhausted of the Edmonton Oilers skating on it, I'm noticing more goals against where the entire Oilers team just doesn't look sharp.

There are some talented players left exposed for GM George McPhee to pick from.

The Blackhawks have the option of protecting eight skaters or protecting seven forwards and three defensemen, and we're leaning toward the second option for the team. Ryan has five years left on a seven-year $50.8 million contract and represents a $7-plus-million cap hit.

Riley Nash: Maybe not the name you expected to see this time past year, but Nash is an incredibly affordable bottom-six piece and with the ability to play both center and the wing, there's no sense in the Bruins leaving him exposed for the Golden Knights.

So for the next few days, McPhee will not only be identifying the best talent available, he'll also be burning up the phone lines trying to turn teams' desperation into an even bigger gain for him.

The former Capitals GM also previously signed Washington defenseman Nate Schmidt out of college and Sharks right winger Joel Ward in free agency and traded for Flames right winger Troy Brouwer. Fletcher, however, said the Wild don't have any such deals in place.

Nashville GM David Poile said he has spoken with McPhee and that the Predators "will do the best we can to protect as many assets as we can".

With Henrik Lundqvist as the lone protected goalie, Raanta is exposed coming off a terrific season in which he made a convincing case to be a possible No. 1. The annual awards ceremonies will be held in Las Vegas on Wednesday.

Chayka was exaggerating, but only slightly.

The Golden Knights must select at least three goalies in the draft but could select more. "Per the guidelines that were set forth under the expansion draft rules, we have submitted our protected list to the National Hockey League", general manager Doug Wilson said in a media statement.

The Golden Knights, the NHL's newest team, will have plenty of options when it comes to building their roster next week.
