Pyeongchang 2018: North & South Korea could collaborate over Winter Olympics

Do Jong-hwan, who was appointed minister of culture, sports and tourism last week, plans to discuss the plan with Chang Ung, North Korea's International Olympic Committee representative, at the World Taekwondo Championships in Muju in South Korea's North Jeolla Province.

With the new role, Taeyang will be in charge of performing the Olympic Winter Games' song, and promoting the worldwide multi-sport event.

Big Bang's Taeyang has been appointed as ambassador of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics. He also stated he believed that North Korea's Masikryong Ski Resort has the potential to be a fantastic Olympic venue.

"We are more than willing to talk about the ideas that he is proposing because the Olympic is always willing to build bridges and bringing down walls".

Majority of Koreans are positive that the PyeongChang Olympics will be successful.

In April, the South Korean women's football team faced the North's players in Pyongyang, while the North Korean women's hockey team took on South Korea at the women's hockey world championships held in the South.

Despite Moon's public statements that he wants to improve relations with North Korea, Pyongyang has ramped up missile testing and continued its aggressive rhetoric towards its southern neighbor and the US.

Respondents also chose their most anticipated South Korean athlete of the Winter Games, with two-time Olympic long-track speed skating 500m champion Lee Sang-Hwa receiving the most votes of 79. However, the country is not known for competing well in Winter Games and was notably absent for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games held in Sochi, Russia.

The proposal is in line with the suggestion earlier this month by Moon Jae-in, South Korea's new president, that the two countries could lead a bid to host the 2030 World Cup.

He insisted there are no contingency plans to move the Games should matters escalate further.
